Chicago's MLB Team Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Two-Year Contract.
In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The deal grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the final year.
Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for winning the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250K for ranking fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.
The agreement includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and grants him a unrestricted player at the end of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.
Having earned Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with recording 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The next night in the title match against the United States, he blasted a tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
