Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Wins Following Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored eighty-six first-half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after guard Terry Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
