In excess of 50 unaccompanied child asylum seekers who went missing shortly after coming the UK and while in the care of the authorities are yet to be found, according to information acquired.

Official Data Indicates Alarming Numbers

Disclosed information has registered 345 children going missing from local care, with 56 of those remaining unaccounted for.

Between 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from welcome hubs for these minors, with 182 recovered and 32 yet to be accounted for.

Nationality Breakdown of Unaccounted Youths

In each instance, youths of Albanian origin were the biggest contingent to disappear, accounting for a full half the aggregate from the facilities, 68, and more than a quarter from the care facilities, 65.

The subsequent biggest nationalities to have vanished from both places are Afghans then people from Iran.

Experts said more needed to be done to recover the vanished minors. "These children did not elect to go missing. These minors should be participating in activities in the park and getting ready for their exams, not servicing smuggling networks in situations we know involve being tied up, physically and sexually assaulted, and punished by being starved of food."

Legal Changes and Persistent Problems

In late 2023, following a long-running judicial process involving unaccompanied minor refugees vanishing from all temporary accommodations, the procedure of regularly housing children in hotels was ruled unlawful.

Instead, authorities committed to enhance safeguards for these children by extending the use of care facilities. After that judicial outcome a further 44 children have gone missing from these centres, with 10 still missing and 34 located.

"When a minor does go missing, the risk that they are being mistreated rises substantially and they are definitely more susceptible to exploitation and illegal trade."

A communications officer said: "Each youth or adolescent disappearing from supervision is a serious concern and we take every effort to safeguard them."

"Lone migrant youths are vulnerable to being smuggled and mistreated due to their distance from family and conditions of their trips to the UK."

The spokesperson noted that qualified social workers reviewed the children's risk of being mistreated with security procedures used in partnership with other agencies, such as law enforcement and appropriate ministries.

Agencies also refer children to systems and programs to help address the danger of mistreatment in the UK, encompassing the official reporting system and the dedicated advocacy service. "Despite this it is problematic to stop all children from vanishing."

A separate representative stated: "The protection and well-being of solitary refugee minors stays important, and we take children vanishing with great concern.
