Thomas Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego Outside.

One snub did the trick. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, who is much too clever not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of using it in the right way. Personal talent matters but England understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when stardom takes over. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of the previous squad. He observed the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel talk about appreciating the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for his club against their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover around the youngster after proving that he is willing to make big calls.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham possesses the edge. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to help him and build a setting where he can use his drive against rivals and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

The star took up much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of love and guidance. He has not played for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it harms the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play central. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

At the same time, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.

“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
